Jaguar XK150 3.4S OTS

Elegant, geraffineerd, en katachtig snel. Als je oog in oog komt te staan met deze Jaguar XK 150 3.4S OTS-cabriolet wordt je de adem ontnomen. Het fenomenale gestroomlijnde design, de krachtige motor en de glimmende spaakwielen… alles is tot in de details verzorgd. Deze auto is een icoon op het gebied van stijl én prestaties. Volledig gerestaureerd, gereviseerd en met matching numbers. Als je het ons vraagt, niet voor niets een beschermde diersoort.

Voor de geboorte van deze Jaguar gaan we terug naar december 1958 waar de XK 150 werd geproduceerd in het Engelse stadje Coventry. Sir William Lyons, Jaguars legendarische en perfectionistische hoofdontwerper, had met dit model een parel geproduceerd die klaar stond om de XK 140 op te volgen. Vergeleken met zijn voorgangers, was de XK 150 een ware evolutie. Er waren enkele belangrijke verbeteringen; de wielbasis werd verlengd en het interieur opgefrist, met nog meer luxe details en mooiere afwerking. Ook kreeg de motor de ”S” variant, zoals deze Jaguar XK 150, met een derde carburateur, een hogere compressie en een verbeterde aluminium cilinderkop, waardoor het vermogen steeg tot 253 pk. Dit maakte de auto een stuk sneller dan zijn voorgangers. En niet alleen zijn voorgangers… de auto werd beschouwd als een van de snelste productie auto’s van zijn tijd.

Het model van Sir Lions was verkrijgbaar in drie verschillende carrosserievarianten: de coupé (fixed head coupé), de cabriolet (de 2 +2 drophead copé) en de open two seater ofwel OTS). De XK 150 werd geweldig ontvangen. In totaal werden er 9.382 Jaguar XK 150's geproduceerd, waarvan er 1.466 van het OTS-type waren. De meeste OTS-exemplaren werden geëxporteerd naar de Verenigde Staten, waar ze erg populair waren onder de jetset van de jaren '60. Zo ook de Britse ‘King of Cool’ en menig lievelings-Bond acteur Roger Moore, die zweerde bij zijn XK 150. Hollywood was nooit meer veilig…

Terug naar het heden. Na een uitgebreid restauratie proces van enkele jaren te hebben doorgaan is deze Jaguar fitter dan ooit. Dankzij een aantal revolutionaire technische innovaties is de XK 150 3.4S-motor van oudsher een van de meest gewaardeerde motoren van zijn tijd, bekend om zijn betrouwbaarheid, souplesse en prestaties. Dát, in combinatie met het feit dat deze 3.4 liter motor is volledig gereviseerd door de specialisten van Van Giersbergen, maakt de Jag ready to rumble! En dat mag letterlijk genomen worden. Met dank aan het unieke uitlaatsysteem dat speciaal is ontworpen om een diepe en krachtige ‘Jaguar-grom’ te produceren, is hij van verre herkenbaar.

Niet alleen de motor is gereviseerd. De Jaguar straalt van binnen én van buiten, van onder en van boven. De nieuwe Maroon Red lak gaat perfect samen met het Dark Tan lederen interieur en het vernieuwde chroomwerk. Het dashboard, de originele en in ere herstelde items in het interieur, de originele leuningen en de donkerrode cabrioletkap… alles klopt. Zelfs als je langs de glimmende spaken en Michelin Pilot X banden langs onder de auto kruipt en kijkt naar de gereviseerde wielophanging en het nieuw gemaakte onderstel.

Als klap op de vuurpijl, heeft deze Jaguar XK 150 3.4S OTS ook nog eens ‘matching numbers’. Dit houdt in dat de motor, body, versnellingsbak en chassisnummer allemaal overeenkomen met het Jaguar Heritage certificaat en identificatieplaatje. Als enige gemodificeerde eigenschap heeft de auto een nieuw gemonteerde 5 versnellingsbak, met een moderne dynamo en 1-2-3 ontsteking. Desondanks, komt de auto met z’n originele handgeschakelde versnellingsbak en blijft dus matching. Het is een prachtig voorbeeld van een klassieke auto die zorgvuldig gerestaureerd is, zonder daarbij het originele karakter te verliezen.

To look at the early childhood of this Jaguar, we must go back to 1960 when the XK 150 was produced in the English town of Coventry. Sir William Lyons, Jaguar's legendary and perfectionist chief designer, had produced a gem with this model that was ready to succeed the XK 140. Compared to its predecessors, the XK 150 was a true evolution. There were some important improvements; the wheelbase was extended, and the interior refreshed with more luxurious details and even more subtle finishes. The engine of the 3.4S variant, like this Jaguar XK 150, also received a higher compression and an improved aluminum cylinder head, which increased the power to 253 hp. This made the car much faster than its predecessors. And not just its predecessors... the XK 150 3.4s was considered one of the fastest production cars of its time.

Sir Lyons' model was available in three different body styles: the coupe (fixed head coupe), the two-door convertible (open two-seater or OTS), and the 2+2 coupe (drophead coupe). The XK 150 was incredibly well-received. In total, 9,382 Jaguar XK 150s were produced, of which 1,466 were of the OTS type. Most were exported to the United States, where they were very popular among the jet set of the 1960s. Among them too the British 'King of Cool' and often praised Bond actor Roger Moore, who swore by his XK 150. Hollywood wasn’t safe anymore...

Back to the present. After an extensive restoration process that lasted several years, this Jaguar is in amazing shape. Thanks to some revolutionary technical innovations, the XK 150 3.4S engine has always been one of the most highly regarded engines of its time, known for its reliability, flexibility, and performance. Not only does it have an aluminum cylinder head, which contributes to lower weight and better heat dissipation, but it also uses a dry-sump lubrication system (the engine oil is stored in a separate oil tank rather than in a crankcase under the engine, which provides better lubrication at high speeds and in corners). That, combined with the fact that this 3.4-liter engine has been completely overhauled by the specialists at Van Giersbergen, makes the Jag ready to rumble! And you can take that quite literally. Thanks to the unique exhaust system that was especially designed to produce a deep and powerful 'jaguar growl', you will recognize this car from miles away.

It doesn’t stop there. This Jaguar radiates from inside and out, from top to bottom. The new Maroon Red paint goes perfectly with the Dark Tan leather interior and the renewed chrome work. The dashboard, the original and restored items in the interior, the original armrests, and the dark red convertible top... everything is right. Even when you crawl under the car along the shiny spokes and Michelin Pilot X tires and look at the overhauled suspension and newly made chassis.

To top it all off, we are happy to announce that this Jaguar XK 150 3.4S OTS has 'matching numbers': the engine, body, gearbox, and chassis number all match the Heritage certificate and identification plate. The only modified feature is the newly installed 5-speed gearbox, with a modern alternator and 1-2-3 ignition. However, the car still comes with its original manual gearbox and therefore remains matching. This Jaguar is a beautiful example of a classic car that has been carefully restored while maintaining its original character.
